Last Table in the Diner

You are the only ones left in the diner at closing when the door locks from the inside and the neon buzzes over a table where a duffel of somebody else's money sits, half-open, between the coffee cups. One of you drew a gun to end this fast; one of you is stalling because a wire is quietly telling the cops where you sit; and the fry cook in the back just dialed a number none of you can hear. The waitress refills the pot like it's any other night, but she's counting seconds too. Lower the gun and lose the leverage, or squeeze the trigger and turn a robbery into the story they show at the end. Decide before the coffee goes cold.
